When I saw the announcement of this course I was quite interested in it, because the last academic year in pedagogical studies was a disappointment. During those studies none of the lecturers had any ideas of their own. They just told us what somebody had researched and kept results as a only truth. I couldn't buy that kind of poverty of mind. On this course I expected to get a lot of new ideas and views.
I was very confused when I got the material of this course beforehand and through e-mail I was informed that Ed is very demanding person, so we should study this material carefully before appearing on this course. The material included a great amount of exercises which should be done by ISETL. But I didn't find anywhere any notice, that should we study ISETL by ourselves and do those xercises. As a scrupulous student I did most of those exercises with my friend. Afterwards I felt little frustrated, because we spend a lot of time for those exercises "in vain" (extra work is hardly never vain).
On the first day Ed lectured a lot of about learning and teaching. He had many good and new (for me) things to say about these subjects and he did it in a lively manner and clearly, which lecturers normally don't do. If I understood Ed's words right, he directed this course mainly for the lecturers in the university. Many times I wondered by myself...
"What am I doing here, this ain't for me. I will never teach in a university". Perhaps I can sometimes apply this method in upper level, because I have already used computer co-operative teaching in training school last academic year.
Computer labs were very interesting and challenging. The mathematical subjects, which were handled by ISETL were quite strange and very difficult for me and this confirmed, that this special course was meant for the university teachers. That's why the grouping Ed made was reasonable. It was nice to use a portable computer for a change, but the screen is made only for the use of one person, because in the group of three only the midmost person could see the screen perfectly.
The lecture of Asuman was interesting to listen. Only the language barrier caused difficulties to understand as during the whole course. In my pedagogical studies we, preschool teachers, used similar method to learn. This was very stupid, because we sit next to each other and chat through computers. That didn't make sense. It might be clever that first the students get to know the subject and after that there will be the lecture of that particular subject.
During this course, I noticed, that in the university there should be
much more language education of mathematics.
