Dear Ladies and Gentlemen!

I have the great honour to introduce you the well-known mathematician and mathematics educator, Professor Ed Dubinsky, who now works in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of Georgia State University, Atlanta, USA.

Professor Dubinsky’s main fields of interest in mathematics have been tied with functional analysis. Worried by the serious problems that students have in learning abstract mathematical concepts, he began, already about 15 years ago, to look for teaching methods that would coincide better with the improved knowledge about learning processes. That time he got acquainted with so called Set Language, a programming language SETL that used mathematical objects like sets and functions. So he began to turn to use computer programming in teaching mathematics and seeking for ways to investigate the achieved learning results. An interactive version ISETL of the Set Language was developed and a model for the steps of learning a concept via Action-Process-Object-Schema sequence was gradually being built. The effective method of Cooperative Learning came as a natural social component as students were working around a computer.

So, as an established mathematician, he has been creating a well-structured framework for research and development in college and university level mathematics education, in which the important notion of Reflective Abstraction, due to Jean Piaget, is used in a crucial way.

Professor Dubinsky has made an impressive career in mathematics and is now making in mathematics education. He has won several awards and his R&D projects have been supported by the National Science Foundation, Universities and for example the Exxon Foundation.
