1. The Department of Mathematics for the year 2000

The year 2000 was again successful for the Department of Mathematics in relation to the number of M.Sc. degrees granted and the productivity of research.

The 28 M.Sc. degrees awarded is an all-time high in the history of the Department (equal to 1999). These good results are due to the efforts that have been made in the frame of the mathematics teacher education project, particularly around the middle of the decade.

The research at the Department of Mathematics mainly concentrates on mathematical analysis. The main research topics are function spaces, complex analysis, functional analysis, Clifford algebras, potential theory and in applied mathematics overdetermined differential equations. The number of refereed publications in international journals in 2000 was 20. At the end of 1999, the Academy of Finland carried out an evaluation process to analyse the research at the Department. The evaluation was very positive about the research done in the Department. However, the number of Ph.D. degrees conferred must rise in the future.

The Department has been operating with decreased funding in 2000. For this reason, the total number of academic staff has slightly decreased from the previous year. The extra funding due to the national programme in science and technology research has become vital in order to maintain the present extent of undergraduate education in the mathematics teacher education and in applied mathematics.

The number of first year students started to increase again in comparison with the previous year but maintaining this trend requires continuous efforts in advertising and recruiting.

2. Faculty and staff

The total staff, measured by person-years, is still decreasing but during last year Faculty staff increased while non-academic staff decreased. Due to saving measures, the total amount of full-time person-years of the faculty dropped below the level of the beginning of the decade. The total staff also decreased in 2000 due to a reduction of the number of staff hired by external funding.

The Department had six full professorships in 2000. Jari Taskinen was nominated into a professorship in mathematics and he took up this position in the beginning of 2000. Senior assistant Liisa Kinnunen, the former Head of the Department, went to teach at high school in summer 2000, so Professor Rauno Aulaskari became the new Head of the Department.

In relation to the work distribution of the faculty, the role of research has started to show some minor increase, the time used for administration has increased while the time in teaching has decreased. The present flexible work allocation system for the faculty has been in use since the academic year 1992-1993 showing the trends of this decade. The diagram below describes the partition of total working hours for the faculty:

In the beginning of the decade, the growing tendency towards teaching purposes can partly be explained by misleading figures in the distribution of the 1600 hour annual working load. In the beginning, the total working hours of teaching have been higher than formally recorded. Lately, a flexible work allocation system has been established and the work distribution figures became more realistic.

Some statistics about the faculty and staff containing information about age, gender and education can be found in Appendix A.

3. Students

In comparison to the previous year the number of students majoring in mathematics has remained equal.

According to the department's strategy, the focus lines for undergraduate education are mathematics teacher education and education in applied mathematics. Further measures are still needed to strengthen the proportion of students in applied mathematics and in signal processing. About 11 % of our students are studying applied mathematics or signal processing while about 38 % of the students have not chosen either of the above two focus lines. The drop-out problem seems to be most serious for these students. By tutorial guidance and by selection procedures the mathematics teacher and applied mathematics study lines should be emphasized so that nearly all students would start their studies in one of these two alternatives. Regardless of the studyline, the students with a clear excellence in theoretical mathematics may specialize in (pure) research mathematics in the latter part of their studies.

The number of applicants has increased but this trend needs continuous efforts and strengthening.

4. Undergraduate education

The year 2000 presents the same record number (28) of M.Sc. degrees granted as the previous year. In the table below, the number of M.Sc. degrees granted is measured by triannual floating averages.

From the new M.Sc. degree holders, 20 have studied in the mathematics teacher studyline and 6 in applied mathematics.

The Department carried on the development measures of educational practices, such as the homework support, tutorial guidance and an increasing use of technology. A special effort deserving mention was a 26 hour course on "Differential equations and dynamical systems" in February, given by professor Heinz Junek (Potsdam). There were two student groups, one of some 20 students in Joensuu, and another of some 15 students in Jyväskylä, to whom 5 two-hour lectures were transmitted by two-way video conferencing. The rest of the course consisted of paper-and-pencil exercises and computer lab work.

A special grant programme for first-year students, funded by the Faculty of Science, together with all Departments, was also continued. In 2000 these grants were given to Heikki Kettunen and Eeva Koponen at the Department of Mathematics.

During the year, concrete plans were made to establish the project Virtual University of Eastern Finland, starting from 2001. The Department will be acting as the coordinator of the pilot project of applied mathematics and mathematical statistics.

The Department received extra funding from the university in order to continue to organize courses as a part of the primary school teacher education. The number of primary school teacher students specializing in mathematics is most significant, even on a national scale. More advanced mathematics courses for primary school teachers administered by the continuing education centre were organized in collaboration with the University of Tampere.

5. Graduate education

The Department continued its active role in graduate education. Two Ph.D. degrees and two Lic. Phil. degrees were granted in 2000. Also, the number of weekly seminars for postgraduate students illustrates the activity in postgraduate education. In the beginning of 2000, four regular seminars were continued. The seminars in operator theory in function spaces, in complex differential equations and in applied mathematics were carried on throughout the year. The research group of Clifford algebras made a long-period visit to Erlangen, Germany.

One visible event in graduate education was the mini-conference in Complex Differential and Functional Equations organized at the Mekrijärvi Research Station during July 30 - August 3, 2000. The core of the mini-conference consisted of five minicourses deliver by V. Gromak (Minsk), G. Gundersen (New Orleans), A. Hinkkanen (Urbana), I. Laine (Joensuu) and S. Shimomura (Tokyo). Altogether, the conference attracted 23 postgraduate and postdoctoral participants.

The graduate school system for postgraduate education in Finland started in 1995. The Department co-operates in postgraduate education in the frame of the Graduate School of Analysis and Logic, the Graduate School of Stochastics as well as in the Graduate School for Teachers for Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, each being network organizations between several departments. The Department also continues its participation with the ECMI program.

The total number of postgraduate students in mathematics was 13 by the end of year 2000. This includes ten students with financial support for full-time studies.

6. Activities under international exchange programmes

The interest towards international student exchange was not as high as in 1999. Altogether, five mathematics students spent part of the year abroad in 2000, one in the USA and others in different countries in Europe.

Under the Erasmus mobility activities of the Socrates programme, the mathematics students had the possibility of exchange to nine European universities. Of them Aachen, Madrid and Nottingham were visited in 2000. One mathematics student studied for an academic year in Montana, USA, under the International Student Exchange Program ISEP. One student from Caen was visiting Joensuu under the Socrates exchange program.

In applied mathematics, the Department participated in the Leonardo exchange program in the frame of the European Consortium of Mathematics in Industry, coordinated by the Technical University of Eindhoven. In 2000, there was no student exchange under the Leonardo program. One student in applied mathematics took part in the 12th ECMI Modelling Week in Lund in July 2000.

The Department continued Erasmus teacher mobility agreements with Thessaloniki and York. The University of York and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki were visited by a faculty member.

7. Research activities

The research at the Department of Mathematics concentrates mainly on mathematical analysis. The main research topics are: function spaces, complex analysis, functional analysis, Clifford algebras and potential theory. Moreover, in applied mathematics overdetermined differential equations are studied.

The research group "Function spaces and complex analysis", codirected by I. Laine and R. Aulaskari, is the largest within the Department. The group has continued its extensive international collaboration in the fields of complex function spaces, complex differential equations, complex functional equations and related investigations in potential theory. The following research achievements from 2000 deserve to be mentioned: (1) The investigations related to Painlevé differential equations have continued relying on active international contacts. In particular, the meromorphic nature of solutions of a modified third Painlevé equation has been settled. (2) In the field of complex functional equations, the main focus has been on Schröder-type functional equations. Moreover, related complex difference equations have been studied. (3) The theory of recently defined Möbius invariant function classes Qp and Qp# has been extended to arbitrary open Riemann surfaces and to harmonic functions. (4) The problem concerning the Lebesgue points of Sobolev functions in metric spaces has been solved. This has been open even for weighted measured in euclidean spaces.

The project "Clifford algebras and potential theory'' directed by S.L. Eriksson-Bique and funded by the Academy of Finland has studied the main research problem of generalizing one-variable complex analysis to higher dimensions. The other topics are stochastic analysis and applications of abstract potential theory.

In the field of analytic function spaces and functional analysis the essential norm of composition operators from the Bloch space to Qp has been characterized by J. Taskinen and his colleagues. J. Taskinen, with his colleagues, have also studied the continuity properties of the Bergman and Szegö projections on space related to H4. Further, parabolic differential equations where the steady state front solution of the Cahn-Hilliard equation is stable have been transferred from one-dimensional space to a higher dimensional case.

The research in applied mathematics directed by J. Tuomela has centered around the analysis of overdetermined differential equations. How to discretise, in a reliable way, overdetermined ordinary differential equations and how to use symbolic computation in the analysis of the solution set of such systems has been investigated.

A new INTAS-project under the title "New Trends in Complex Analysis and Potential Theory" started in May 1, 2000, being one of the ten projects in the field of mathematics selected for funding from the application call of 1999. The project is coordinated by Prof. Ilpo Laine; the other participating institutes are from Würzburg, Helsinki, Kiel, Kiev, Lviv, Saratov, Yerevan and Kharkov. The project will continue up to April 30, 2003.
