Fourier Series Methods in Complex Analysis

Mekrijärvi, July 24–29, 2005

Department of Mathematics, University of Joensuu, organizes a Workshop on "Fourier series methods in complex analysis" at the Mekrijärvi Research Station close to Joensuu, Finland, in July 24–29, 2005. The workshop is part of the Finnish Mathematical Society Visitor Program in "Function Spaces and Differential Equations", to be organized in several Finnish departments of mathematics during the academic year 2005–2006. The main organizer of the Visitor Program is Prof. Jari Taskinen, University of Helsinki, and the Workshop will be organized by Prof. Ilpo Laine, University of Joensuu, and Prof. Eero Saksman, University of Jyväskylä.

Program of the workshop

The program of the workshop consists of the lectures offered by invited main speakers, and of contributed talks by the participants. The invited main speakers are A. Alexandrov (Steklov Institute, St. Petersburg, Russia), H. Ki (Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea), A. Kondratyuk (Lviv State University, Ukraine), J. Miles (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, U.S.A.), M. Sodin (Tel Aviv University, Israel) and R. Trigub (Donetsk National University, Ukraine). Each of the main speakers will offer a small number of lectures of 50 minutes. The titles of their lectures will be as follows:

Alexandrov: Approximation by Riesz kernels in Lp, p<1, and related questions

Ki: Zeros of Fourier transforms

Kondratyuk: Background and nature of Fourier series method for meromorphic and subharmonic functions

Miles: Fourier series in value distribution theory

Sodin: Growth, zeros, argument and area estimates. Variations on the theme.

Trigub: To be announced

Observe that the invited main speakers are going to spend some time in Finland, either in Joensuu or some other university, either before or after the workshop.

If you wish to make profit of this possibility for cooperation, please contact Prof. Laine or Prof. Saksman, see below.

The contributed talks will be 30 minutes each.

In addition to invited lectures and contributed talks, ample time will be reserved for scientific discussions among the participants, according to the basic idea of the Visitor Program to offer new ideas for research. Therefore, postgraduate students and post-docs are encouraged to apply for participation.

Time and venue

The workshop will be organized at the Mekrijärvi Research Station of the University of Joensuu, situated about 80 kilometers east of Joensuu, July 24–29, 2005. Bus transportation from/to Joensuu to/from Mekrijärvi will be organized in July 24, leaving Joensuu around 2 p.m., returning back around 4 p.m., July 29. Full-board (accommodation, breakfast and two meals) in Mekrijärvi costs (tentatively) 26 €/day, in accommodation rooms of double occupancy.

Travel arrangements

You may arrive Joensuu by plane from Helsinki and by train either from Helsinki or from Turku. For flight schedules, please consult http://www.finnair.fi and http://www.vr.fi for train schedules.

You may also arrive Joensuu by bus or by your own car. If you intend to do so, please contact Mrs. Riitta Sinkkonen, see below.

Registration

Please return the enclosed registration form as soon as possible.

The participants are expected to cover their travel and subsistence, except for the transportation from Joensuu to Mekrijärvi and back. In addition, a small fee of 20 €/day will be charged to cover some of the organization costs.

Due to space limitations, the participate into the workshop is limited to 40 persons by the first registered - first served basis, among those who have the necessary mathematical background.
