Our Reviews

this is a very pleasant hotel well located in Killarney. It has generous parking, a fine restaurant and decent bar. The employees are very helpful. Despite having a room on the street the weekend Kerry won the all Ireland I had no problem sleeping. The breakfasts are fine and although the bar doesn't open until 5 it is comfortable and quiet. An excellent experience. Rooms clean and beautifully decorated. Both breakfasts and evening dining a pleasure. The rack of lamb was to die for! The staff were efficient and very friendly, nothing was too much trouble. I would thoroughly recommend Foleys and hope to return. S S S S S

What a beautiful downtown guesthouse. Right in the heart of Killarney and within walking distance of all that the town offers. If we were not on a tight schedule, we would have stayed longer. The facility was beautiful with off street parking. The room was quiet, spacious, and comfortable. The whole staff was outstanding, friendly and always available. Our desk clerk, Moira, was our "personal" concierge as well as a professional who took her job seriously and made our stay extraordinary. We will return here on our next trip to Ireland. S S S S S

Family & Building History
Foleys Restaurant and Townhouse was originally built in 1795 as a couching inn and has hosted generations of tourists. In the late1800's, part of the building was occupied by the Royal Irish Constabulary and local Fenian rebels were jailed here during the 1867 rebellion.

Paddy Foley was born in 1915. Margaret Scollard was born in 1912.

Paddy and Margaret met in Killarney and married in St. Mary's Cathedral in 1942.

As a newly married couple, they rented No. 24 High Street and had three children, Nick, Seamus and Carol. In 1949 they decided to open a grocery shop and a small 20 seater restaurant with 7 guest bedrooms upstairs. Paddy grew his own vegetables in the back garden of the restaurant. These were sold in the grocery shop and used in the restaurant by Margaret.

In 1964 the family had to move from No. 24 High Street as their lease was expired. They bought No. 23 High Street (now Foleys Restaurant) and renovated the property. They created another grocery shop at the front, a restaurant to the rear and 17 bedrooms upstairs. Many happy years were had here with their family.

In 1967 Margaret died at a local hospital aged 54. Her daughter Carol was at boarding school when she received the call to return home. After this, Carol never returned to school. She helped her father Paddy run the business and did so for the next 13 years. During this time, Carol met Denis Hartnett and they married in 1973.

When Paddy died in 1980, the grocery shop closed and a bar was put in it's place. The guesthouse was temporarily closed while Carol and Denis raised their family of 6 children. During that time they also purchased No. 22 High Street, formally known as Glen House and renovated. In 1996, Denis and Carol bought No. 24 High Street, Carol's original home and again renovated, this is where the townhouse is currently located. Foley's is a listed building and its entire frontage is protected.

After many years in business, Foleys is still run by Carol, Denis and family. Carol, also head chef, has trained in the Michelin stared restaurant Le Moulin De Mougin in the South of France and worked as a chef for over 45 years. Denis, your host, has an extensive knowledge of wine and many years experience within the industry.

We look forward to welcoming you to Foley's!
