The first ever Skiing Chess tournament (Merkijärvi Championships)
was organized in Mekrijärvi Research Station in Ilomantsi.

Rules and Tournament story
Team Running Chess rules were used: team can make a chess move after
completing the skiing task: about 50m distance downhill and back
using skis or kicksled. Chess rules apply except no turns: zugzwang
and stalemate do not apply.
The tournament was organized during the ECSE Winterworkshop.
Paddy and Tomi used sledges and the rest were skiing. After
the qualifications Paddy withdraw (too much snow for someone
been in Finland <1 month) and Pasi was allowed to recruit
Mikko as replacement.
