Quebec City, Canada
August 2002
The group of Finnish researchers from Lappeenranta and Joensuu on their
memorable way to Quebec City via Helsinki, Frankfurt and Montreal. These
pictures are during the flight from Frankfurt to Montreal when the mood
was at its highest, and refreshments were still provided by Air Canada.
Positive conclusions were that Joni Kämäräinen gave
written commitment to complete his PhD studies in 2003, and that
(2) Everybody (eventually) made it to the final destination Quebec City.
Joni kept his promise and had his
dissertation in 28.11.2003.
Additional excitment was provided by one person (whose identity is
not revealed but definitely nobody from Joensuu) decided to explore
less known facilities at Montreal airport, local accomodation options
in Montreal, and alternative slower traveling options to reach Quebec
City. The motives might have been (a) a sudden attraction to the airport
of Montreal, (b) suddenly attacking home sickness, (c) bad service in the
form of proper refreshments in the local commuter airline, (d) or simply
lacking sufficient quantity of sense of humor by the same service
providers. Only the person in question knows the real story but you
may need to offer a refreshment or two to get any further info out
of anybody. Water torture does not work. :)
Parade
At the arrival day we collided with a parade in the beatiful old city.
The people in the second picture are from left to right: random tourist,
Alexander Kolesnikov, Heikki Kälviäinen, Jussi Parkkinen, Ismo Kärkkäinen,
Ville Kyrki and Jarno Mielikäinen.
Attractions of Quebec City
Tomi Kinnunen, Ismo Kärkkäinen and I exploring the local attractions.
Conference
Some of us actually spended some time in the
ICPR
conference as well:
- Alexander hanging around in the poster area.
- Lappeenranta guys had a stereo presentation (Ville & Joni).
- Tomi enquiring schedule from Ismo. Whether it was conference or bus schedule I don't know.
- Hanging around too long in the poster area can be exhausting.
Bike trip
Even in a good conference, a break-off in the form of bike trip can be a
good idea. With Alexander we explored a water fall that was promoted as
being "higher than Niagara". Besides the falls itself, we discovered
that scientist tend to think the same way as we several other collagues
on our way and at this unorganized rendez-vous point. :)
Accomodation
These are pictures of our lovely hotel in the old city where I, Alexander,
Tomi and Ismo stayed during the visit.
