Singapore marathon
Race like no other
(5.12.2010)

"Eka puolikas takki auki, toinen puolikas takki tyhjä"

Seems like I had much more self-confidence than common sense. Made the mistake to start too fast: 10km=42:50, Half=1:32:02. These might be ok for Singapore, but not ok for my today's performance.

Until there the race was nice and quiet, only very few people at these paces. Followed few others for awhile, then dropped back to tried to relax the pace when feeling that my stomach is sleeping. I had not problems with it but kind of expected energy lost might appear later in the race, just like it happened. Only part was somewhere 15-18 km when I catched the group again and even passed them. Was doing quite strongly at this point, too much self-confidence.

After the half point I started to feel that battery is running out of energy and eventually it did. From 27 km to the end of the race was rough. Earlier around 15 km I had the Billy Ocean song in my head "When the going gets tough the tough gets going" with good mood, but now it changed to "When the going gets tough it just rough".

Eventually I just went to the cruising mode when I realized that there were nothing to do, game was lost. No new personal track record nor prize money in the veteran series, only motivation was to get home. Only driving force was to not stopping to walk, which was so tempting at many times.

The final straight and crossing the finish line was great though, but mainly because the race was then over. More motivating story with some pictures coming (much) later, meanwhile, roger and out. Going lunch.
