About Us
Established in 1925, and based in Vancouver, Emily Carr University of
Art + Design is one of Canada’s premier post-secondary institutions, and
British Columbia's only University dedicated solely to art, design and
media education and research.
Our four-year Undergraduate Degrees merge critical theory with community and studio practice, and our two-year Graduate Degrees, in Applied Arts and Design respectively, further prepare students to engage and compete in a growing creative economy, where the demand for visual art, design, and media talent is increasing exponentially. As well, Emily Carr's Department of Continuing Studies offers professional certificates, pre-university and lifelong learning opportunities in these areas.
Emily
Carr is dedicated to fostering an educational environment that is
professional, practice-oriented, innovative and at the same time, rooted
in history and critical theory. As a learning community, our
purpose is to organize, amplify and transform creativity into an
infinite spectrum of possibilities for our world. To achieve this
purpose, our University provides a transformative and empowering
learning environment, dynamic faculty and attracts a diverse student
body:
- Our curriculum is flexible, personal and multidisciplinary -- based on the learning needs of our students, whom we encourage to develop new and innovative ways of thinking and creating.
- Our faculty are working artists and designers who encourage experimentation within every artistic medium, from sculpture and photography to multimedia and industrial design.
- Our facilities and resources support student learning, research and academic programs.
- Our University is international in scope, and in recent years, we have hosted international students from over 50 countries while local students have the opportunity to apply for co-op credits, internships and an exchange program that currently features membership with 75 art and design schools in Canada, the US, Mexico, and Europe.
Earning a degree at Emily Carr involves more than the acquisition of a body of knowledge. Together, we learn, challenge, encourage, enable and collaborate to achieve our highest intellectual and creative potentials, while sharing a common focus – to responsibly contribute value to our culture, our economy and our society at all levels.
Upon leaving Emily Carr University, graduates take with them our reputation, as well as the critical thinking skills, practical capabilities, and professional values they will use both in life and in the pursuit of new knowledge throughout their careers.
