Filtering us used to choose a subset of a set information items corresponding to the information interests of a user. The paper introduces a method for defining filters for strcutured documents.
Filtering is a capability needed in all information retrieval systems. Currently, a gret deal of digital documents are stored and transmitted in networks as structured documents.
A constrained template is suitable for specifying parts based on conditions concerning the context of the parts. A filter allows to express conditions conserning the content of parts.
Capabilities for filtering structured text are becomming more important because of the rapid increase in the SGML use. This paper introduced a theorethical framework to be used as a basis in designing flexible and powerful user interfaces for filtering structured documents.
