The tests of the SPSS-course are normally checked every second week. The tests submitted during holiday season will be checked after the holiday season.
A) Open IBM SPSS Statistics-application through Desktop or Start-menu
The following instructions and screenshots are based on version 19 of SPSS.
a->b->c = Select a from the main menu, select b under a and select c under b.
NOTE! Keep this window open while using SPSS. Both windows should be kept sufficiently large.
Choose Type in data and click OK-button
Second alternative: Choose Cancel and select File->Open->Data
Click Variable view-button
Variable's name can be 8 characters long and include both characters A-Z and numbers.
Label, which can include spaces and also special characters, is used for describing the content of a variable.
Assign the following variables (see the picture below) :
Variable gender is defined as String and it's measure is defined as Nominal!
Click Data View and input the following data
Select Transform->Compute Variable
Set the name of the new variable in Target Variable-field.
Input the calculation clause to Numeric Expression-field and click OK.
Data View will now include a new variable and it's data.
You might want to check, if the calculations are correct.
Note! SPSS gathers log of, for example, calculations, which are located in the output-window!
The log is useful, if you want to find information about e.g transformations
Select File-> Save As.
You can save the data e.g to your own on-line folder. Assign a name for the file and click Save.
SPSS saves the file with .sav ending.
Close SPSS and output-window by selecting File->Exit or by pressing
